“Discipline is the refining fire by which talent becomes ability” #beyourownguru #BYOG

Video Transcription…

Let’s talk about discipline today. It’s received an undeserved bad rap because there are many misunderstandings about what constitutes discipline.

So I’m going to share with you my favorite definition of discipline and it goes like this, “Discipline is the refining fire by which talent becomes ability”. And I heard this when I was a teenager and it really struck me with great force and it has been an inspiration, this particular saying for the whole of my life.

And it is true.

Because if you take your innate abilities and if you refine them, tweak them focus them, you take that raw material and you can do something wonderful with it.

Whatever your starting point is. You mold it into something a tool, an instrument, a passion, that can change your life.

And all this from a little bit of discipline. It’s wonderful! And so think about that.

And make the distinction between being disciplined and being repressive or oppressive or overly dictatorial or tyrannical with yourself. That is not discipline.

Discipline can be distinguished by its ability to create more positivity, to create more creativity, and to lift you and to lift the things you have innately within you to new heights, to new levels. And take you where you want to go.

Repression on the other hand, imprisons you. Discipline will free you, it will liberate all those things that are locked inside and make something of them.

So in the course of today think about dreams you left behind, maybe talents that you thought you lost, hobbies that you gave up because they seemed too frivolous and look at it through the eyes of discipline.

How can you take those and channel it and rein it in and use it as a vehicle to your future.
